Chapter Twenty

GAGE ROSE FROM COVER, an [Ice Shard] at the ready. “We need to end this fight ourselves. Whatever Creed is trying to take from Alikari, we don’t want him to get his bony hands on it.”

“Agreed.” Seth unlimbered his bow. “You focus on the undead, and I’ll start killing demons since I get bonus damage against them.” He moved off into the trees like a ghost, and Bodhi followed him before Gage could stop her.

Peri stood and fired her crossbow into a wight. She activated [Shield of Cinders] and advanced, loading and shooting faster than Gage had thought possible.

He, Shirrana, and Annie followed behind the tank, backing up her frontal assault with their own ranged attacks.

While they approached the remnants of the battle, Seth became a deadly killing machine from the shadows of the bone trees. He darted from tree to tree, his compound hunting bow firing with deadly accuracy. Whenever he fired at a target who hadn’t noticed him yet, his [Shadowstrike] Ability gave him Advantage on the shot and made a portion of the damage Lethal. It was even more effective against demons, thanks to a Demon Hunter profession bonus. They fell like wheat before a scythe.

When they got within range, Gage switched from his Spells to Mockri. He gave the whip a few test swings. As it slid back and forth, he commanded the claws to open and close, and they obeyed. He Attuned it to Lightning, and the Fae extended through the weapon, making it feel almost like another appendage. He could control it precisely. His attacks could even arc around to strike from unexpected angles.

He lashed out at a wight that was crouched with its tongue embedded in the belly of a squirming drukka, draining its black blood. The whip’s bony claws latched on and sent a powerful blast of lightning into the ravenous monster. It uttered a garbled shriek, arching backward and tearing its long tongue out, yanking the drukka’s organs along with it.

The drukka went limp as Gage finished the [Stunned] wight off with another strike from the whip.

Peri swapped out her crossbow for her flaming Halligan Bar. “That whip is still pretty disturbing, you know.”

“I’m just glad it’s on our side now.” He lashed out at a new target, this time opting to use his Ice Aspect. “I’ll try to pin them down. You get in there and tee off on them.”

She nodded and waded into the fight. Their strategy worked like a charm, and when he froze a target to the ground, Annie and Shirrana piled on as well, capitalizing on their inability to dodge. When several wights and demons surrounded Peri, she unleashed her [Sweeping Strike] Ability, damaging all of them at once.

A triumphant cry drew Gage’s attention. Creed had killed the porter and knelt beside him, utterly focused on the strongbox. He had drawn a knife that looked like a short, fat-bladed machete and, true to his word, was hacking off the porter’s hand. It was probably quicker than trying to unlock the manacle around his wrist.
